CRS has co-hosted a two-day conference on April 11 and 12 titled “Northeast Asia Regional Young Leaders Security Symposium” with Pacific Forum, foreign policy research institute based in Honolulu, Hawaii. This Symposium brought together a small, selected 20 junior scholars in their personal capacities to share perspectives on extended deterrence issues and their impact on regional security in Northeast Asia.
The symposium consisted of three parts.
- Five teams (Japan, United States, South Korea, China, and ANZUS) discussed perceived threats and positioning in Northeast Asia.
- Each team deliberated on how their country would hypothetically respond to a given TTX scenario.
- Joint statement acceptable to all parties were drafted based on the TTX .
Through this tabletop exercise, participants grasped the importance of cooperation and negotiation with nations. Participants were also able to understand how negotiation work to get agreement on their joint statement at international conferences.
