The world has entered a new era of “great power competition.” While this competition will have a military dimension, its primary arena will be economic. In this world, it is essential that governments have a clear and unblinkered view of the international environment in which they are operating, an understanding of the tools of economic statecraft, a strategy to advance national interests in this world, and policy mechanisms to ensure that all three of those factors align. One way to ensure that objective is the creation of a National Economic Council.
